Modern Urban Agriculture

Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants with roots suspended directly into clean, nutrient-enriched, aerated water, eliminating the need for soil. This makes it possible to grow much more in a much smaller space, and since the roots are free to take up all the nutrients a plant needs without restrictions, they grow much more quickly. Aquaponics combines hydroponics with aquaculture, or the practice of raising fish, to make it possible to give plants all the nutrients they want organically. The by-products of fish-rearing are the same nutrients plants require so we can use those by-products to create a circulating system that gives plants what they need and then circulates the now clean water back to the fish so that they can thrive in a natural environment. This is a small-scale version of the same system that exists in nature. Both systems can easily fit into most homes, giving fresh produce and seafood with nearly zero input.
